more questions?

What do I need to bring to Unstoppable Writers?

You’ll need a pen and paper for the first half of the day. You might also want to bring a laptop for the afternoon when you’ll be spending time on your writing project, or you may prefer to continue to write by hand, it’s up to you. (If you have a condition that makes writing longhand difficult, then please feel free to bring a laptop to work on during the morning session.)

We provide free tea, coffee and biscuits. You might want to bring a packed lunch, visit the Gallery Cafe or grab something at one of the local supermarkets.

Do I need to be an experienced writer to come to Unstoppable Writers?

All you need to be in order to come to Unstoppable Writers is a human being.  We believe that all humans are inherently creative and that creating makes us happy. But also, that creativity is like exercise. The longer we go without, the weaker the muscles get. What used to feel natural and easy can start to feel impossible and scary. So these writing hang-outs are like exercise classes for creativity. It’s just like a yoga class. (But with coffee. Yay!)

Will this class teach me how to write a novel?

This session will teach you how to develop a writing practice that will last you for life. We are not offering “How to” classes. We won’t be talking about sentence structure or grammar or plotting. We won’t be reading out our work and critiquing it. We won’t be telling you how to write the next great novel or get an agent or find a publisher. Instead, we’ll be practicing actually writing and getting used to the emotions and challenges that arise when we do that.

You don’t go to a running group or yoga class to become a famous runner or renowned yoga practitioner. You do it because it’s good for you and it feels great. It’s the same with writing. Writing connects us to ourselves. And if you do it often enough and for long enough you’ll get better, you’ll become more ambitious, you’ll want to finish books or poems or screenplays and polish them and send them out. You might be doing that already. Great. But through it all, we write.

What happens on an Unstoppable Writers Day?

You’ll arrive, help yourself to tea or coffee and get settled. We’ll introduce ourselves before beginning the first session, which will include writing prompts and free writing exercises to get your creativity flowing. After lunch, we’ll use a coaching technique to get refocused and you’ll have dedicated time on your writing project of choice. (If you don’t have a work in progress, don’t worry – we’ve plenty of prompts to get you going or you might want to wander around the gallery to spark your inspiration!) You’ll also have the opportunity for a 10 minute one-to-one with Nicola to discuss your writing or with Teresa to discuss your blocks to writing.
